Miles & More

What is Miles & More

Miles & More is the travel reward scheme of Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian, and is one of the largest reward programs in Europe. As it is not a transfer partner for American Express, miles are a little harder to earn for the UK consumer than with other major reward schemes (ie. Avios and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club).

As with all frequent flyer schemes, points can be earnt in a variety of ways and redeemed to give discounted flights (you still need to pay the taxes and fees).

What are Miles & More miles worth, and where can you redeem them?

Miles & More miles can be redeemed on 35 airlines, at 200,000 hotels worldwide, car rentals, airport voucher (through Heathrow Rewards) or for a number of gift card options.

Whilst the value of miles varies depending on how they are redeemed, on average 0.75p per mile can be achieved.

Full details on where to redeem can be found here.

How to earn Miles & More miles

Whilst a majority of the earning partners for Miles & More are European and based on the continent, there are a number of ways UK travellers can earn their reward miles. Car hire (500 miles per rental), hotel stays (at least 1,000 miles per stay at over 20,000 hotels worldwide), flights (35 airlines including star alliance members) and in flight spending.

Whilst there is no-longer a Miles & More branded credit card available to UK consumers, the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express allows for points to be transferred 1:1 to Miles & More to give an earning rate of 1 point per £1 spend.

Interestingly, Heathrow Rewards points can be transferred to Miles & More at a rate of 1:1.

How many miles do flights earn?

From the 12th of March 2018, the Lufthansa Group airlines - Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines - will introduce a new system for calculating award miles. The basis of the calculation will be the fare (the ticket price plus any surcharges levied by the airline concerned) multiplied by a factor dependent on the passenger's frequent flyer status (the base multiplying factor is generally 4).

Which airlines can they be redeemed on?

Reward flights with the following 26 airlines can be booked online:

Finding a reward seat

A mileage calculator can be found here.

The easiest way to find reward seats is through the Miles & More website (here).

With a last-minute booking from 14 days before departure with a Fly Smart award, you'll save up to 50% of the miles normally required for a flight award.

Taxes

Whilst taxes for European flights are considerably more expensive than for Avios redemptions via the Reward Flight Saver scheme with BA, an additional 15,000 miles can be used to cover taxes, fees and surcharges.
