The Scottish Government today announced plans to charge 20p deposits on bottles and cans. This 20p fee will be refunded to the user if they are recycled.
Legislation is hoped to be introduced by the end of the year, with the introduction of the scheme likely to take at least a further 12-months.
For England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there is currently a consulation ongoing as to whether to introduce similar schemes.
Methods for gaining the refund upon recycling plastic bottles and cans are likely to follow a similar process to countries such as Norway, which have efficient bottle recycling processes in place.
This announcement is a good start, and we are hopeful it will encourage the rest of the UK to adopt a similar policy, to put a stop to the huge amounts of plastic waste.
